A boy, for one gets tamped down into a quagmire of sorts bestowed by ‘the long arms of the law’ and a girl, driven by her spark of desire to make it high in the hospitality industry, pastry domain, join hands. What transpires when these two career-minded folks, meet each other in yet another Cosmo city in India? A chancy ‘togetherness’ from thereon, they find each other’s company tantalizing while another girl, a Lithuanian, drops her baggage in. Be it another place, a hotchpotch of cultures – cruise liners or zippy ‘ship-life’, the threesome has to make do with their own peppy mindsets and the right pick, be it their cabin mates, friendship bonds, or the voice of their hearts. Splendidly Red is a marvellous medley of human experiences that depict the turning points in a young Indian adult’s life. Ceyan is your next-door neighbour boy with whom you will journey through the big city struggles, job interviews, vividness of his feelings, bickering with chefs, the nuances of pastry and bakery, ups and downs of cruise life, gestures of unselfish love and holding on to friendship. The myriad shades of life leave a trail of nostalgia. I am sure readers will relate to their younger self, friends and relatives, first love, and the challenges of a simple lifestyle conveyed through the delightful prose. In addition, readers will be impressed by this genuine storytelling wherein the author has put his heart and soul without the trappings of commercial interest that make it feel authentic and near to life. Jain excels with this worthwhile debut. I hope the readers and I will read many more stories from him.
